Nikon Configurable Large Envelope X-ray and CT Systems

Nikon’s Configurable Large Envelope X-ray and CT Systems are designed for internal and external inspection of components with diverse sizes and densities. The range combines a large scanning envelope, configurable X-ray sources and detectors, metrology-grade manipulator construction, and multiple CT acquisition options for inspection environments ranging from R&D laboratories to the shop floor.

The range includes VOXLS 40 C 450, M2, C2, and C3, with configurations supporting different scan volumes, payload capacities, manipulator designs, source combinations, and enclosure formats.

Configurable X-ray and CT Architecture

The large-envelope platform provides a wide range of hardware configurations to match different inspection requirements.

Available configuration options include:

• 8 different X-ray sources
• 7 detectors
• 3 granite base lengths
• 2 manipulator constructions
• Single-piece cabinet, panelised room, or manipulator-only configurations
• Up to 3 X-ray sources, depending on system
• Up to dual detectors

This flexibility allows systems to be configured according to required penetrative power, resolution, scan speed, scanning volume, and inspection environment.

Multi-Source & Dual Detector Capability

Nikon’s large-envelope systems support multiple X-ray source configurations from its microfocus range, enabling combinations of penetrative power, resolution, and scanning speed.

A choice of flat panel detectors with small pixel sizes and fast exposures supports high-throughput CT and DR inspection. Combined with Nikon’s CLDA, the systems also support advanced scatter correction for high-density components.

Metrology-Grade Manipulator

The systems use granite-based manipulators combined with rigid towers, precision motors, and encoders.

This construction is designed to provide:

• Mechanical stability
• Thermal stability
• Positional accuracy
• Repeatability

Depending on the selected system, either a Synchronous-Style Manipulator or Bridge-Style Manipulator is used.

Large Scanning Envelope

The large-envelope platform supports inspection of sizeable components through extensive scanning volumes and flexible source-detector movement.

With up to 4-position panel shift and synchronous Y-axis source and detector movement, the maximum available scanning envelope can accommodate samples up to:

• 1000 mm swept diameter
• Over 1500 mm tall

Individual system scan volumes vary according to configuration.

Automation-Ready Inspection

When combined with an integrated robotic loader and the Nikon Automation OPC UA Interface, the large-envelope systems can support automated, closed-loop inspection at high speed in a Quality 4.0 production line environment.

Available Systems

For alternative installations, the systems can also be offered as manipulator-only configurations for a pre-existing enclosure.

VOXLS 40 C 450

The VOXLS 40 C 450 combines up to dual X-ray sources and dual detectors with a synchronous-style manipulator. Its standard scan volume is 800 mm (Ø) × 1415 mm (H) with a maximum payload of 275 kg.

M2

The M2 supports up to triple X-ray sources and dual detectors with a bridge-style manipulator. It provides a standard scan volume of 630 mm (Ø) × 988 mm (H) and a maximum payload of 180 kg.

C2

The C2 combines up to triple X-ray sources and dual detectors with a synchronous-style manipulator. Its standard scan volume is 1090 mm (Ø) × 1285 mm (H) with a maximum payload of 275 kg.

C3

The C3 provides the largest standard scan volume in the supplied range at 1090 mm (Ø) × 2460 mm (H). It supports up to triple X-ray sources and dual detectors, uses a synchronous-style manipulator, and has a maximum payload of 400 kg.
